Jarmaine Grant

As I Jarmaine Grant introduce myself to you, I will give a little insight on my life. I was born on the 8th day of April 1975, in Harlem,NY. I am the third child of four, born from father & mother Leroy & Carrie Grant.I have two older sister`s Joyce and Sharlene Grant and one young brother, Corey Grant.I attended elementary school at Harriet Tubman (P.S.154) and Junior high school for success (I.S.175). In I.S. 175 is where I met a man who became a large part of bettering my life. His name is Nate”tiny” Archibald,an ex-professional NBA Basketball player. He was the Basketball Coach during my Jr. High school years. One day Mr. Archibald sat me down and we had an in-depth conversation about what success and life means,at that mo- ment, a little bit of everything became clear to me.Throughout my time there he continued to push the sport of basketball. He became one of the most positive role models in my life.Basketball became a great outlet for me. An outlet in which I began to love! through Basketball, I was offered a Scholarship at Rice High school a Catholic High school also in Harlem,n.y. Where I Pursued basketball for four years alongside a great player named Felipe Lopez. Then I was accepted to Westchester Community College (W.C.C) in Vahalla N.Y. for the next two years. During my fi rst year I played alongside a player name Mike Campbell, who was one of the best player`s in the country. It was a rewarding experience to play with talented, and skilled players during my time at W.C.C. After completion of my two years Westchester Community,is when I thought there was going to be a great milestone in my life. I was fortunate to be invited to a Basketball tryout at North Carolina University with three other ball player`s from N.Y.named Keyshawn Moore, Danny Reyes,& Rayshawn Brown,

on April 23,1998. We never reached our destination, On April 23,1998 our lives changed forever. It was such a cataclysmic event.A couple of hours into our trip we were pulled over by two New Jersey State Troopers. In Seconds the situation spun out of control. We have come to know this unfortunate incident as the “1998 New Jersey High Racial Profi ling Case”. This occurrence changed our lives and now we hope to ameliorate this issue of “Racial Profi ling” Until this day the struggle continues. We are Veracious in our ht for this cause. My life has been blessed, Currently I am married to a supportive wife, Andrea Gail Grant and we have a healthy and beautiful daughter, Layla Grant. My Mother played a large part in my life and without her I may not have sustained. Having my family is all the support I need. We, Keyshawn Moore, Danny Reyes,Rayshawn Brown & myself share our story with the world as a way of assisting in preventing future experiences with “Racial Profi ling”. Spreading our message in various ways (fundraising, Charities, and speaking to community etc) in prevention of all types of discrimination. We pray and hope we can bring a cease to future situation that we have been blessed to live through.
